Emma Anderson, the 2023-24 Laurence G. ’56 Pathy Vising Professor in Canadian Studies, is featured in an episode of “Ideas,” a scholarly radio documentary series on CBC radio. The episode is based on her award-winning book, “Betrayal of Faith: The Tragic Journey of a Colonial Native Convert,” and tells the story of an Innu boy named Pastedechouan, who was taken to France in 1620 to help missionaries convert his entire nation.
Emma Anderson is a historian in the Department of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa. As the Pathy Professor in the Humanities Council’s Fund for Canadian Studies in Fall 2023, she taught “Indigenous Peoples and Christianity” in the Program in Humanistic Studies. In the course, students explored the effects of contact between the Europeans and Indigenous peoples from early 17th century encounters in Canada and North American into the residential schools of the 19th and 20th centuries.
